Empower and NCE Maritime CleanTech engaged students and young entrepreneurs on some of the most pressing issues for the world’s oceans. Watch the highlights in the video above.

Two questions captivated the audience during The Explorer’s event at Ocean Now: How to stop plastic waste from reaching the oceans – and how cruise tourism in Norwegian fjords can become greener.

The first question was asked by Empower, a start-up from Oslo, while the second came from NCE Maritime CleanTech, a maritime commercial hub in Western Norway. Though differing in size, both companies share a purpose deeply rooted in preserving the world’s oceans.

The companies met student and young entrepreneurs from Norway at a workshop hosted by The Explorer. The young audience was eager to learn about the companies’ work and to offer their own ideas.

In the end, the two best ideas were awarded on stage. Christopher Butlin won the Empower award, for his idea to track individual pieces of plastic waste through their cycle from waste to new products. Jakob Nelvig, meanwhile, won the NCE Maritime CleanTech award for his idea to charge electric cruise ships using small and mobile charging vessels. Congratulations!
