Using algae to make medicine, cosmetics and food

MicroA uses microalgae to create novel ingredients for healthcare products, cosmetics and food.

At a glance

  • Microalgae production for creating natural ingredients
  • Currently used in medicine and cosmetics, but also viable for food and feed
  • Production absorbs carbon dioxide and uses minimal land and fresh water resources

Agriculture uses about 70 per cent of fresh water across the globe, while greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture and industry continue to grow.

Meeting the need for natural ingredients in industry in coming decades requires new thinking. The same does feeding humans and animals, with the world’s population expected to reach almost 10 billion by 2050.

Green biotechnology

MicroA is taking a new approach to industrial and agricultural production by using microalgae to produce a range of natural ingredients.

Microalgae are tiny organisms living in water, and they use the sun as their energy source, just like plants on land. The algae can be used, for instance, in medicines and cosmetics, as well as in human food and animal feed.

MicroA produces microalgae using special tanks and a patented production system. The process combines biological expertise with high technology to create commercially viable products.

Up until now, industrial production of microalgae products has been limited, with only a few commercial products within the nutraceutical and cosmetics sectors on the market.

Concrete benefits

Microalgae production occupies minimal land area for production compared to traditional agriculture. The production process also consumes minimal fresh water, as it mainly uses seawater.

Microalgae grow naturally in seawater and are biodegradable. They can replace fossil-fuel based products and eliminate problems with waste after use.

Microalgae even consume carbon dioxide and produce oxygen through photosynthesis, so they can be cultivated using carbon emissions from other industries.

Market potential

The opportunities for high-tech microalgae production are vast. There is an increasing demand for natural ingredients in several major markets including healthcare, cosmetics, nutraceuticals, animal feed and food.

MicroA products are currently mainly used in healthcare products and cosmetics. MicroA is now moving towards production of human nutrition, animal feed and biofuels. The company has more than 10 years’ experience and a global network of partners.
