TotalCtrl Home helps consumers to reduce food waste

The TotalCtrl Home app helps consumers to save time, cut costs and prevent food waste by providing a complete overview of household foods, sending expiry date notifications and suggesting recipes.Published 1 Dec 2022 (updated 7 Feb 2024) · 2 min read

Globally, almost one third of all food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted annually. In developed countries, 38 to 50 per cent of this waste occurs at the household level.

There are a variety of reasons for household food wastage, such as date label confusion, food spoilage, preparing too much food and poor planning. In countries where food is a smaller portion of a household budget, consumers may value time over preventing food waste. They may therefore take fewer shopping trips, purchase more than they need and throw away excess food.

App to prevent food waste in households

TotalCtrl Home helps consumers to keep track of all of the food in their household. The app also clarifies conflicting best-by and sell-by date information, sending the user notifications when products are about to expire.

TotalCtrl Home draws upon an extensive database to generate recipes based on what the user has in the kitchen. This helps consumers to cut planning time significantly, easily use all products before they expire and avoid preparing too much food. In addition, the app’s shopping list helps to prevent impulse buying or over-buying.

Concrete benefits

TotalCtrl Home is user-friendly. The food is quickly added into the app, giving the user an immediate overview of their pantry, fridge and freezer.

This in turn helps to eliminate household food waste, which has the double effect of saving consumers money and reducing food waste on a larger scale.

Future versions of the app will have a receipt scanning function as well.
