Reducing energy consumption in industrial rotating equipment

Rotating equipment is a key component of most industrial operations, and thus contributes significantly to their overall consumption of energy. Pumps alone consume up to 20 per cent of the electricity in the developed world. Up to 90 per cent of all pumps operate inefficiently, and operations therefore account for 85 per cent of their life cycle cost.

Moreover, rotating equipment is often oversized. This not only leads to increased energy consumption and emissions, it also increases maintenance costs and reduces the equipment’s total life cycle.

Optimising the efficiency of pumps, fans and blowers

The SmartSave solution comprises both a service and technology to help industrial operators to reduce running costs by identifying and addressing inefficient use of rotating equipment. The process begins with an analysis of existing operations, and identification of any practices that result in excessive energy consumption in order to project potential savings through systems optimisation. The service also provides an economic investment analysis, enabling operators to calculate their return on investment and apply for energy reduction incentive programmes.

The next step involves implementation of a system connecting SmartSave’s own software to appropriate hardware such as sensors to digitalise and automate equipment operations and optimise energy consumption.

A pre-study provides customers with a tangible overview of energy saving potential, followed by implementation of a system with state-of-the-art technology that is compatible with all pump models and manufacturers and is prepared for full AI integration.

The system provides continuous real-time monitoring to optimise energy consumption and also displays energy savings in real time.

SmartSave is offered as software as a service (SaaS), with optional upgrades such as analytics, predictive maintenance, consultations, and more.

As of 2017 the value of installed water pumps globally was USD 50 billion. The global water pump market is estimated to reach USD 67.9 billion by 2024.

SmartSave’s market is large and growing, and covers both retrofit and new installation market segments. It also spans multiple industries, including land-based process industry, aquaculture, energy, oil and gas, maritime, and more.
