Solar power has a critical role to play in the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy. There are, however, drawbacks to land-based solar farms. For example, they require large areas with abundant sun. But there are only a limited number of suitable sites located near the population centres where most of the power will be used.

Eco-friendly and efficient

Floating solar in general, and floating offshore solar in particular, will open up vast new opportunities for energy production.

Floating solar farms can be located in areas such as reservoirs and the open ocean, which are otherwise unproductive. In addition, the water acts as a heat sink, increasing energy yield.

Ocean Sun’s patented solution consists of modified silicon solar modules installed on large floating structures. The modules are supported by a thin hydroelastic membrane, preventing waves from breaking as well as saltwater intrusion – two challenges with offshore solar farms.

The structures are built to withstand harsh conditions, exploiting Norwegian expertise in maritime, photovoltaic and aluminium technology. All system components consist of environment-friendly materials with a minimal carbon footprint.

Concrete benefits

Due to its modular design, Ocean Sun’s floating solar power installation is easy to install and maintain. It can be located near populated areas, thereby reducing electricity transmission costs and the need for new infrastructure to connect to the grid. It is also discreet and can be situated out of sight from shore, with cables on the seabed.

Floating solar power is well suited for islands, aquaculture facilities and other offshore installations. Another important application, combined with hydroelectric power, is to enable energy/water conservation in reservoirs and seamless shift between hydro turbines and solar power.

Market potential

The market for floating solar on freshwater reservoirs is potentially TW scale, according to the Asia Clean Energy Summit 2017. Meanwhile, a study conducted by Multiconsult estimates that the offshore solar market will grow to 500GW by 2040 in Southeast Asia alone.

Ocean Sun has successfully tested a prototype off the coast of Western Norway since April 2017. A test facility has also been built on a fish farm outside Singapore. The company will soon install one of its floating offshore solar solutions to power a large Norwegian fish farm. Systems for hydroelectric power dams are also in the pipeline.
