Omega-3 fatty acids have benefits for several body functions, including cardiovascular health and brain development and eye health.*

These polyunsaturated fatty acids cannot be synthesised in the body and must be supplied through the diet. One US-German study showed that as much as 95 per cent of the population  in those two countries does not meet the recommended intake of omega-3 fatty acids.

A caviar extract from sustainably sourced wild-caught herring

Romega™ from Arctic Bioscience is a caviar oil made from the roe of North Atlantic spring-spawning herring. Although herring is one of the world’s most commonly fished species, during filet production the roe is typically discarded or used in low-grade products such as animal food.

Arctic Bioscience has developed a patented method for extracting the phospholipid-rich oil from this roe, creating a sustainable, high-end product from an underutilised raw material. In contrast to many conventional omega-3 supplements the phospholipid content in Romega may result in a more efficient uptake of the omega-3 fatty acids in the body.

Concrete benefits

The herring caviar oil, Romega™, contains high level of phospholipids, which have important structural functions in cell membranes and can be found in every cell in the human body. Compared to many conventional omega-3 products, Romega is rich in docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which is associated with maintaining healthy brain function.*

Romega is also a source of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), which is associated with maintaining cardiovascular health, as well as a source of vitamin D.*

Market potential

The demand for omega-3-based nutraceuticals and pharmaceuticals is high. One estimate values the global omega-3 market at USD 2.49 billion as of 2019, while projecting an annual growth of nearly 8 per cent a year in the coming decade.

In Norway, Arctic Bioscience sells Romega™ directly to customers and selected retailers. Globally, the company operates on a B2B basis, providing herring roe oil and herring roe protein to partners who wish to use it in their own product development.

Arctic Bioscience is currently developing an investigational medicinal product from herring roe to treat mild-to-moderate psoriasis.

*) A daily intake of 250 mg EPA and DHA contributes to the normal function of the heart. A daily intake of 250 mg DHA contributes to maintenance of normal brain function. A daily maternal intake of 200 mg DHA in addition to the recommended daily intake for omega-3 fatty acids for adults (i.e. 250 mg DHA and EPA) contributes to the normal brain development of the foetus and breastfed infants.
