Fish is – and will continue to be – a vital source of animal protein for the global population, which is expected to exceed 9 billion people by 2050. And aquaculture will play a critical role in ensuring that enough fish is produced.

Fish farmers have traditionally relied on fishmeal and oils as the main ingredients in feed, as these provide well-balanced, high-quality protein and Omega-3 fatty acids. However, the need for these ingredients outweighs the availability, and many of the fish stocks they are sourced from are being depleted due to overfishing.

Microalgae have great potential as an alternative and sustainable source of marine protein and oils. The feed market is vast and growing, but it demands high production at low prices. The technology for cultivation of microalgae on a large scale has not yet been optimised. This is particularly true for Nordic climates.

Growing microalgae from waste

AlgaePro is developing technology for cultivating microalgae through circular bioeconomy, using biowaste from municipal waste management, as well as carbon dioxide and waste heat from industrial sources.

Microalgae are typically grown in large ponds or in a photobioreactor – an apparatus for cultivating microorganisms that use photosynthesis to generate biomass from light and carbon dioxide. Photobioreactors usually take the form of large cylinders or hanging bags, and the sun is the main source of light.

Micro and macroalgae are the only alternative and sustainable marine source for primary production of marine proteins and Omega-3 fatty acids.

AlgaePro’s technology will pave the way for commercial cultivation of microalgae from waste streams for fish feed and other specialised aquaculture products, thereby promoting the circular bioeconomy.

The technology will also enable countries with colder climates and access to abundant clean energy to sustainably grow microalgae for their own aquaculture industry.

Market potential

The global aquaculture market is expected to grow to more than USD 224 billion by 2022. The demand for sustainable microalgae will grow at a pace.

Although considerably smaller – and with many technological challenges to be surmounted – the global market for microalgae is forecast to exceed USD 75 million in revenues by 2026.

AlgaePro is a startup established in 2018. The company has signed a letter of intent for access to biowaste from a municipal waste management company, and also has a partner that provides access to CO2 from the petroleum industry.

AlgaePro has been selected to join the EU’s EIT Climate-KIC Accelerator. AlgaePro is planning to enter specialised niche markets in the aquaculture industry first to launch its initial products and solve the challenges of microalgae cultivation in the north.
